The details that identify a piece
Photograph the piece and its marks, record weight, dimensions and materials, and note the hallmarks with an honest confidence level: a rubbed date letter is "probably 1902", not "1902". The field sketchbook is there for the mark a camera will not catch in the light you have.
Where it came from, kept properly
Inherited from whom, bought where, resized when — jewellery carries family history more than any other kind of object, and the provenance chain here is append-only so that history accumulates instead of getting retold. Records export freely, which also makes them useful documentation to keep alongside an insurance valuation done properly elsewhere.
