Every hallmark is a sentence in a language worth learning to read — and worth writing down once you have.

Photograph the piece and its marks, record weight, dimensions and materials, and note the hallmarks with an honest confidence level: a rubbed date letter is "probably 1902", not "1902". The field sketchbook is there for the mark a camera will not catch in the light you have.
Inherited from whom, bought where, resized when — jewellery carries family history more than any other kind of object, and the provenance chain here is append-only so that history accumulates instead of getting retold. Records export freely, which also makes them useful documentation to keep alongside an insurance valuation done properly elsewhere.
Nothing is priced and nothing is for sale. Your collection starts private; share a museum of it if you choose, with the people you choose.
